Stage One Complete [May. 23rd, 2007|10:54 pm]
[Current Mood |excitedexcited]

The flooring is completed! Woo-hoo! (Well, ok, I have to go and buy the trim stuff to go around the skirting board, but I'm not overly worried about that part...)

Had to buy a jigsaw for Dad to finish off, but got a v. cheap one from B&Q so am now v. happy :)

Photos to follow!

Stage Two begins on Friday night - painting!

Today went spiffingly well. My dad is now renamed The Laminate King! I have the rather dubious new title of The Polyfilla Quuen :/

The floor is 99% finished, I just need to borrow a jigsaw thingy from a friend so daddy dearest can cut the last few bits.

I'm really pleased with the colour of it. It's very warm and inviting.

I also bought the paint today - finally. I opted for Russian Velvet 6 by Dulux. I just hope it's not too garish or girly when it's up...

Today is DIY day. I'm to wake my dad up and enlist his Handy Andy style skills :)

The plan for today is to get the flooring laid, and hopefully get the walls painted, if I can find any paint! I wish B&Q opened a bit earleir than ten on a Sunday - I'm raring to go now!

Possibly the coolest name for an emulsion? [May. 19th, 2007|08:55 pm]

Amendment to the previous post - I've just spotted a paint on the Dulux website called 'Russian Velvet'! I want it just for the name!

I now have the keys to Studio 3!

On Tuesday, my fabulous friend Brenda took all of the seats out of her Picasso and helped me collect the furniture and laminate flooring from Ikea (I opted for the white wicker sofa, chair, screen and table from the Agen range and the Span flooring.

I want to paint the walls pink. Not scary pink! Or baby sugar pink. A nice, sophisticated, 'grown up' pink - something like Fuschia Falls, a new one on the Dulux website - but it's not available in any of the DIY shops I've been in :(

The closest would be the B&Q's own paint, in Red Raspberry, but guess what? It's been discontinued!

I've searched Wilkinsons, Wickes, B&Q, Rapid, John Lewis... even Woolies! But I just can't find a classy pink.

I'm getting a sinking feeling... it's going to be difficult getting the perfect pink...

How smart is your RIGHT foot? [May. 14th, 2007|09:29 pm]
[Current Mood |sillysilly]

Amusing email I received today...

You have to try this, it really works. This only takes 2 secs...

And you will keep trying it at least 50 more times to see if you can outsmart your foot.

But you can't.

1. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles with it.

2. Now, while doing this, draw the number '6' in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change directions.

I told you so. And there is nothing you can do about it.

Make sure you pass this on to your friends. They won't be able to do it either.

Quick update [May. 13th, 2007|09:00 pm]
Ooh, it's been a busy few months! Just time for a quick update:

I made an executive decision and moved into a Studio at Creative Space. Best decision I have ever made! Brilliant place, loads of fab people and resources.

In fact, I love it so much I'm upgrading! To a much bigger studio ... about three times bigger actually. The studio I have right now is only really 'workroom' sized - big enough for my machinery, a cutting table and pressing area. What I really need is a space for consultations, too. It's more expensive (obviously) but I'm going to make damn sure I increase my productivity to cover the extra costs.

Have been to Ikea today looking at laminate flooring and posh furniture to make my new studio look shiny and professional. Am v. excited.

Long time no update... [Nov. 23rd, 2006|04:54 am]
[Current Mood |contemplativecontemplative]

It's been far too long since I visited LiveJournal. Methinks it's time for an update!

Quite a bit has happened. I've finally just completed The Big Wedding Project. Four satin-back-crepe bridesmaids dresses (two adults, two kiddies) one velvet bridal coat (with hood and train) stoles for the bridesmaids and a velvet ring cushion with pearl edging. It seemed to take forever, and it had it's fair share of hiccups (running out of satin so had to make the Matron of Honour's dress from the velvet - which turned out beautifully) but we managed to iron out any problems with relative ease. Pics will be posted as soon as the bride is back from honeymoon!

In other news, I have left my job at the sewing machine shop. It was a tough decision, but I'm finally going to go for it and devote more time to my own dressmaking business. I already have a client who wants a party dress for Christmas (her main inspiration is from a silver Julien Macdonald dress) and a lady who wants some sewing lessons next week (I'm also going to advertise myself as a sewing tutor as I loved teaching in the shop)

I'm also looking into getting a Studio to work from, I might go and have another look at it today... it's in a building that only rents out studios to people in the creative industries, so I'll be mingling with other arty types lol! Only problem is, it's quite a few miles away (the studio is in North Liverpool and I live in South) but there's nowhere similar in my neck of the woods... hmm, decisions, decisions...

Threads Magazine [Aug. 28th, 2006|07:37 pm]
Bad news: Last time I called in, my usual stockist (Smiths of Wigan) of Threads Magazine had no copies anywhere in sight.

Good news: Borders in Leeds has got several copies!

Bad news: They have it priced at £5.75.

£5.75? It's only £3.75 in Wigan! *grumble grumble*
